Hurricanes Depth Chart: UNC Edition

Robert Mayer-US PRESSWIRE - Presswire

The coaches released their depth chart for the upcoming game against the Tarheels. There are a few notable changes, although they are expected.

There were quite a few mistakes made on defense against Notre Dame, and not all of them can be chalked up to a young team. Some were just guys out of position. The majority of the depth chart remains the same, and what changes there are are fairly obvious. This weekend, we get the tarholes Tarheels. Let's see how we are stacking them up.Without further ado, the chart:

As you can see just by scanning through it, there are a few changes. I've highlighted a few of the bigger ones.

  • Robert Lockhart Jr. breaks onto the chart as a co-backup with Kendal Thompkins. Personally, I've been waiting for this one. I think Lockhart was a big get in recruiting, and can be great for us. He certainly doesnt have a huge wall to breach in beating out Thompkins.
  • Duke Johnson is now listed as a starter along with Mike James, where previously it had been a clear 1-2 ranking between the two.
  • Clive Walford is listed as the starter at TE for the first time this season. He had a big catch early on against ND, and is starting to show flashes of what we all thought he could be. If he gets more involved in the offense, things can only get better.
  • On the defensive line, Darius Smith gets demoted pretty heavily following a VERY dumb penalty against the Irish. Well, that and Olsen Pierre is back from injury. Corey King gets the starting nod at the other tackle position. Golden has said all year, however, that the D-Line is by committee, so the starters don't matter a whole lot.
  • Freshmen Tyriq McCord and Jelani Hamilton take over the backup positions at defensive end. McCord has been coming on strong as of late, and showing why he was a wanted man. Hamilton has been learning quickly, and has certainly earned the backup role.
  • Gionni Paul takes over at starter to fill out the ranks with Perryman and EJ. I am mixed on this one. Paul has shown flashes of greatness, but he has also shown a lot of learning curve. I REALLY like what I saw from Raphael Kirby in the time he got, and am hoping that Paul loses out to Kirby soon. I think the combo of Johnson, Perryman, and Kirby is a very scary one.
  • Ladarius Gunter gets the start over Thomas Finnie at corner back. Finnie made some mistakes, but Golden was vocal in that he will still play, but right now Gunter is doing better. Freshman Tracy Howard got a lot of play against the Irish, but is still listed as a backup on that side.
  • Deon Bush continues his meteoric rise as the second best freshman so far, and retains his starting spot at safety along with A.J. Highsmith. The longer Telemaque is relegated to a backup position, the better. He's got to clear his head of whatever is causing him to be mediocre as a senior (probably not in his head...)
  • Easily the most dumbfounding move of this chart is the fact that Jake Wieclaw is still listed as the FG kicker. He has been horrid the past two games, and while Golden continues to give him a vote of confidence, I can't see him getting too many more games like he has had recently before he is pulled for Matt Goudis.
