CanesHoops Land Commit from Standout JUCO Big Man

USA TODAY Sports

This big man has been dominating the competition in JUCO and just gave the Canes basketball team his verbal commitment. Find out why he picked the Canes.

After a dominating win in the opening round of March Madness, the Canes hoop squad and Coach Larranaga got a much needed commit from JUCO standout James Kelly. The Owens CC (Toledo, OH) 6' 8" 245 pound forward had a terrific year averaging 18.4 points and 10.5 rebounds per game this season. Kelly recently broke the Owens Express career rebounding mark and gives the Canes a much needed presence at the 3/4 position next year.

Kelly told SOTU the reasons why he chose Miami over New Mexico and others:

I feel like when I first started being recruited, Coach L made me feel comfortable...like I was apart of the family. I chose Miami because its a life experience and I would want to help the program excel... Coach L and the coaching staff are good coaches.

With 5 Seniors graduating, including big men Julian Gamble, Kenny Kadji and Reggie Johnson, Kelly will likely fill one of those open slots.

The Canes will still need to sign one or two more big men and the Canes are hot on trail for Faith Baptist forward Demetrius Henry who has the Canes in his top three with USF and South Carolina. There had been a rumor that Henry wasn't qualified academically yet but his AAU coach Kenny Gillion told SOTU that "Demetrius Henry was 100% qualified at the end of his senior season at Northeast High School. He did not need to attend prep school for academic reasons." Gillion also stated that in order to play at Northeast you needed to maintain at least a 3.0 GPA. Henry is set to announce during the April 15th signing period and would be a terrific compliment to Kelly in the paint if the Canes were to land him as well.
