Hurricanes Win Fifth Straight With 10-1 Victory Over Bethune-Cookman

Steve Mitchell-US PRESSWIRE

The Hurricanes exploded for six runs in the fourth inning to beat Bethune-Cookman 10-1.

The 'Canes rode the momentum they gained from the sweep over North Carolina State this weekend to avenge the loss suffered to Bethune-Cookman on March 11th, by crushing the Wildcats tonight 10-1.

Derik Beauprez making his third start of the season UM, ran into some trouble in the top of the first inning.  After getting the first two hitters of the game out, Beauprez surrendered three straight walks to Matt Noble (1-3), Austin Garcia (0-3) and Eros Modena (2-3) loading the bases for Wildcats third baseman Jordan Robinson.  Robinson (1-4) hit a single to right field driving in Noble putting Bethune-Cookman on the board at a score of 1-0.  However, that would be all the runs the Wildcats would generate the rest of the night.

UM finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third when Sebastian Diaz (0-0) drew his first of four walks for the game.  After an Alex Hernandez (2-3) sac bunt and Dale Carey (1-3) reaching base after getting hit by a pitch, senior left fielder Tyler Palmer was up next.  Palmer (2-4) delivered with a single for his first of two RBI's for the night driving in Diaz tying the game at 1-1.  Freshman phenom Willie Abreu (2-3) followed Palmer right up with a single to center field driving in Carey for Abreu's fifteenth RBI of the season.

In the bottom of the fourth the 'Canes exploded for six runs putting the game out of reach. After fly outs by Brad Fieger (0-3) and Johnny Ruiz (0-4),  Brandon Lopez (1-2) and Sebastian Diaz would reach base on walks issued by Bethune-Cookman starting pitcher John Sever. Batting was Alex Hernandez and Hernandez hit a ball that just fell in right in front of the diving left fielder Bryant Munoz scoring Lopez for what would be the first of two RBIs for Hernandez in tonight's game.  Dale Carey kept the two out run scoring going with a double down the left field line scoring Diaz putting UM on top 4-1.  After his RBI single in the second inning, Tyler Palmer kept it going by delivering a single to right field scoring Alex Hernandez for Palmer's seventeenth RBI of the year.  Willie Abreu would draw a walk to bring up catcher Zack Collins with the bases loaded.  Collins (1-3) was coming into tonight's game hot after driving in six runs in Sunday's game against NC State and Collins kept the hot streak going by hitting a bases clearing three run double putting the score at 8-1 in favor of UM.  The three RBI's put Collins at twenty two RBIs for the season putting him into sole possession for first on the team.  That would end the day for Wildcats starting pitcher Sever who finished by only going two and thirds innings while allowing eight runs on eight hits, while issuing four walks and striking out two.

Derik Beauprez's night would also be done after four innings but, the six runs in the fourth would be more than enough for the bullpen.  Javi Salas led the way by pitching three scoreless innings, followed up by Danny Garica pitching a scoreless eighth.  In the bottom of the eighth UM added two more runs with RBIs from Sebastian Diaz on a walk for Diaz's first RBI of the year and Alex Hernandez with a RBI single for his second RBI of the game to put him at twelve RBIs for the year.  Enrique Sosa would pitch a scoreless top of the ninth to give the 'Canes the 10-1 win.

The Hurricanes travel to Blacksburg, Virginia to begin a three game series against the Hokies of Virginia Tech.  First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 5:30 PM it can be seen on ESPN3 and heard on 90.5 WVUM.
