Congrats to Brandon Linder, Pat O'Donnell, and Seantrel Henderson. Hearing your name called on draft night (be it day 1,2,or 3) is the culmination of years of hard work and a dream come true.
But not every NFL contributor makes his way the drafted route.
The Super Bowl Champion Seattle Seahawks had a roster this past season made up of 21 players who were undrafted. Yes you can find value in many unconventional places.
Superstar players like John Randle, Kurt Warner, and of course former 'Cane Sam Shields also started out undrafted.
Here is a full list of UM players looking to take the hard road to NFL stardom:
DL Justin Renfrow
OL Jimmy Gaines
OL Jared Wheeler
TE/WR Erik Swoope (Basketball)
WR Allen Hurns
QB Stephen Morris
FB Maurice Hagens
FB Maurice Hagens
DT Curtis Porter
DL Shayon Green
San Francisco 49ers
TE Asante Cleveland
Our take: Hard to believe Hurns wasn't plucked. The all-time UM leader in catches figures to get a long look in Jacksonville. In my mind Hurns was simply the victim of an incredibly deep WR draft this year. Look for him to stick around at minimum as a practice squad player for the Jaguars. How much of Stephen Morris' struggles his senior year were due to a balky angle? We will find out quickly in the preseason as he battles to back-up Chad Henne this year and Blake Bortles likely next. Reuniting with Jedd Fisch, with whom he had his best season when Fisch was the OC in Miami, gives him a decent chance to stick. The hardworking Green deserves a long look by the 'Phins. Perhaps he benefits from being teammates with former Miami DE Olivier Vernor. Swoope is intriguing. His athletic ability is with out question. If he shares the football aptitude of former 'Canes hoops star Jimmy Graham, watch out. But the transition from hoops to the gridiron is not as easy as Jimmy G makes it look. Hagens is underrated and may stick as well. In all honesty, every other UM player on this is a long shot.
