State of the U Catches up with Former Cane, James Dews

James Dews played basketball at the University of Miami from 2006 – 2010. For his career, he averaged over 8 points per game, including more than 10 per game during the 2007-2008 season, which was the last time Miami made the NCAA tournament. We caught up with James to see what he’s up to now, as well as what he thinks about this year’s team.

The last time the Miami Hurricanes made the NCAA tournament was the 2007 – 2008 season, when the Canes beat St. Mary’s in the first round, but dropped to a Texas squad in the second round that featured three future NBA players, including Dexter Pittman and DJ Augustin. Amongst the Hurricanes on that team was then Junior guard James Dews, who finished second on the team in scoring that season, only behind guard Jack McClinton. James was kind enough to answer some questions for us about this year’s team.

IK: What have you been up to since your time at Miami?

JD: I spent a little bit of time playing Pro Ball overseas right after my time at Miami. Since then Ive been in sales and coaching a 7th grade basketball team.

IK: Looking back on your time as a Cane, what was your favorite memory?

JD: My favorite memory would have to be playing in the NCAA basketball tournament. Not many people can say they have done that.

IK: What's it been like for you as a former player to watch this team and all of the success they're having?

JD: This has been the most fun I've ever had watching the game of basketball. I recently told Reggie [Johnson] and Julian [Gamble] that I've never been more proud to be a Miami Hurricane. The way they are playing right now at such a high level has put Miami on the map were we belong.

IK: What do you think these guys can accomplish in the tournament?

JD: I think they can and will go all the way and win it all. The Hurricanes will be National Champions this year. We have all the tools to do so. Ill take our Guard play over any other team in the country. Our experience in the post and the way they are playing is second to none. The way Coach Larranaga has my boys playing is no Fluke. Coach Larranaga and his staff are the real deal and that is why I know we will win it all!

IK: If you had to give a message to this year’s team, what would it be?

JD: I would say enjoy every single moment. There is nothing like playing college basketball. I truly miss playing with my brothers every single day. Also I would say don't hold anything back. 2007-2008 we came up short in the second round. Theres a ton of plays in that game against Texas we can always sit back and wonder what if. Make sure you don't have that feeling. Give it all you got and go win it all!

Big thanks to James for taking the time to talk with me, and go Canes!
