Resilient Hurricanes Hoops defeat ASU 60-57

UM comes away with a very solid win against a quality opponent.

The Miami Hurricanes escaped the Honda Center in Anaheim with a gutty 60-57 win, finishing the Wooden Classic with a very respectable 2-1 mark, and improved to 5-3 on the season.

UM fell behind by as many as 8 points in the first half, but kept fighting and eventually subdued the Sun Devils.

Davon Reed was a force all day,  but was especially unstoppable in the final 20 minutes.

The leg weary 'Canes struggled early to find shots in the first half of their 3rd game in 4 days.

When they did find shots,  they had trouble knocking them down, converting just 7-24 in the first half.

The Sun Devils 7'2 Jordan Bachysnski was a presence defensively from the on set.

But bolstered by a couple of late Davon Reed free throws and a nice post move by James Kelly, Miami was sticking around trailing just 30-24 at the half.

The Hurricanes knocked down 8-10 from the charity stripe in the first 20 minutes. ASU had 10 1st half assists on 11 FGs made.

UM did do a fantastic job all day on Arizona State superstar PG Jahii Carson, holding him to 8 points on 2-14 shooting in. Carson came into the contest averaging a hair under 22 a contest.

The final 20 minutes were a whole other ball game.

The Canes finally got the lid off the cup and came out sizzling in the 2nd half, quickly cut the lead to 1 on a three ball by Reed and a nice pull up jumper by Rion Brown.

ASU answered though by getting inside, Bachyskinsi doing the most damage.

The teams continued trading buckets, with Reed dropping a nice dime to Kelly to keep it close,  but another and one by the AZ State big man keeping UM at bay.

The resilient 'Canes kept coming though.

Reed's 4th triple of the game and a baseline jumper by fellow freshman Manu LeComte sliced the lead back to 3 at the 8:40 mark of the second half.

The white hot Reed would hit another moments later to tie the game, and a Garrius Adams step back jumper would put the Miami ahead and finish off  a 10-0 run.

Egor Koulechov would nail a 3 pointer to retake the lead, but Rion Brown would tie it up with a free throw as things heated up.

Two more free throws put UM behind,  but Donnovan Kirk would nail a jumper and throw down a monster dunk on Bachyskinsi inside two minutes to even things up again.

The Sun Devils tried to retake the lead with Carson, but Brown collected a long rebound and leaked out for a break away dunk to put Miami ahead 59-57 with 28 seconds left.

ASU had one last shot, but Kelly closed out nicely on Jermaine Marshall and the Adams rebounded.

Reed finished the day with 19 points,  Kelly added 11.   Bachynski led ASU with 20, Marshall added 14.

Miami next squares off with Nebraska, on Wednday 12/4 at 9:30 PM EST as part of the Big Ten ACC Challenge.
