The Twilight ZONE: 'Canes Roll Georgia Tech 56-42

New, 6 comments

The 'Canes headed to Georgia Tech with the goal of erasing the memory of their previous loss at home to Florida State. They succeeded.

Scott Cunningham

Miami's zone defense was solid early and late - and it was Donovan Kirk providing most of the offense in the first half. The senior C/PF has been one of the 'Canes most valuable contributors this season. Kirk scored in just about every possible way. At the rim, posting up, and beyond the arc. Kirk continues to impress.

The first half was a defensive struggle. First one to 50 slowly started to look like first one to 40. With 5 minutes left in the opening half, a sum total of 19 points were scored. Toward the end of the half, Garrius Adams started to heat up and showed confidence taking the ball to the hoop. When Georgia Tech finally overplayed him, he found Erik Swoope for an easy 2 inside. Then Swoope put back an errant Adams three to give Miami a 23-17 lead with just over two minutes left in the half. Miami finished strong and headed to the locker room ahead 27-17.

Miami continued to dominate in the 2nd half but then Georgia Tech started to close the gap. It looked like the late game jitters were about to set in, but Manu Lecomte put the finishing touches on one of the best games of his young career by hitting his FTs, making clutch shots and taking care of the ball.

Around The Arc:

Manu Lecomte has improved at quite a clip. The freshman PG is looking better and better each time out.

Tonye Jekiri still looks tentative on offense, but his aggressiveness challenging shots, rebounding, and overall defense have vastly improved. He still tends to pick up silly fouls.

The 'Canes zone defense has been impressive. I know Coach Larranaga will likely go back to consistent man-2-man defense when he's got the bodies, but I hope Coach keeps working on the zone as well.
