Weekly Observation(s)

Florida Had an Eventful Week

The weekend started out well enough for the Gators. They beat the upstart Tennessee Volunteers at Neyland Stadium in a true "slugfest" 10-9. The game turned when freshman Quarterback Treon Harris entered the game late and led to crucial scoring drives that propelled the Gators to victory. It looked like the end of the tenure for then starter Jeff Driskell.

Later in the weekend though Treon Harris was accused of sexually assaulting a female student and due to the investigation he has been suspended from the football team. In another turn to this saga, Harris' attorney came out today (Thursday) saying that his client actually wasn't the aggressor in the act.

Due to the pending investigation it looks like Harris will have to be away from the team until the matter is settled

The Golden Panthers are on the Prowl

Has Ron Turner "turned" a corner with this program? He's won two in a row, albeit over two lowly programs (over UAB and FAU) but one has to wonder. FIU is in a talent rich area in south Florida and can pick up the scraps of whatever recruits are left after the other top and middle tier football Programs come calling. Couple that with the fact that they're in the middle Conference USA and it looks like maybe there could be something to the notion that FIU could make something of themselves moving forward. Can they steal a victory from a big program? It's extremely doubtful but again, within their conference they could start to make headway.

Scheduling Can Get you Paid. It Can Also Ruin Momentum For the Season

The prime example of the above notion is FAU. They played both at Nebraska and at Alabama to open up the season. Both games were pure money grabs and both games were unadulterated beat downs, FAU was not the stomper.

If you take those two games out of the equation though FAU would be 2-2 with a heartbreaking loss to Wyoming being one of those two defeats 20-19. But "almost" only counts in horseshoes so they're 2-4 looking at an uphill climb to make it back to respectability.

If You Put the Miami Offense and the Florida Defense On One Squad You'd Have a Top 10 Team

But we can't do that so both teams are stuck in mediocrity for the immediate future. One can dream, right?
