Canes Pick Up 4-0 Win Over FGCU

Miami Allows Only Two Hits In 4-0 Win Over FGCU

Steve Mitchell-US PRESSWIRE

After a tough loss on Monday to Virginia, the Hurricanes had to quickly put it behind them as they took on Florida Gulf Coast University on Wednesday to try and get some momentum before a trip to North Carolina State.

Mission accomplished.

The 'Canes relied on their pitching surrendering a total of just two hits for the game. Derik Beauprez who was making his second his career star,t was solid as he pitched five innings while giving up no runs on two hits and strook out four. After Beauprez was pulled, sophomore lefty Thomas Woodrey pitched three scoreless innings of his own before letting Cooper Hammond come in to pitch a one two three top of the ninth to give the 'Canes a 4-0 win.

The first of the UM's four runs came in the bottom of the first. Dale Carey (2-4) hit a single to left field and stole second to get in scoring position. With runners on first and second after a Willie Abreu (1-3) walk, Designated Hitter Zack Collins, who hit the ball well in the Virginia series, produced an RBI double down the right field line driving in Carey for Collin's twelfth RBI of the year and making it 1-0 Canes. The Canes added on two more in the bottom of the fourth with Johnny Ruiz (3-4) doubling down the left field line putting a runner in scoring position to start it off. Alex Hernandez (1-2) the next man up hit a single up the middle driving in Ruiz for Hernandez's tenth RBI of the season. Hernandez advanced to third on an infield bunt single by Garrett Kennedy (2-3) allowing Brandon Lopez (0-2) to drive in Hernandez on a sac fly for Lopez's twelfth RBI of the year and the third run of the game for the Miami. The Canes added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth with a RBI single from Garrett Kennedy for his tenth RBI of the year and that would be all the Canes would need to secure their fourteenth victory of the year.

With the win the Canes go to (14-12, 5-4 ACC), while Florida Gulf Coast University drops to (16-9, 3-0 Atlantic Sun) with the loss.

The Canes will travel to Raleigh to begin a three game series with NC State starting on Friday at 6PM, the game can seen on ESPN3 and heard on 90.5 WVUM.
