Miami Hurricanes Spring Practice: Quick notes from Practice 3

UM continued spring practice today, here are the notes.

On offense Gus Edwards had a very good day running the ball, and with UM not going full tackle during spring (except during the three scrimmages) the 6-2 235lb running back was frustrating the defense all day, and especially during 11 on 11 "hard contact drills." Almost every carry ended with three to four defenders draped around him. There were times he showed that he was more than just a power back ,highlighted by a touchdown where he outran the defense. Golden was happy with his performance and praised his patience. He also confirmed that Gus is about 235 pounds and hasn't lost a step.

Additionally nothing seemed to change on the quarterback front. Ryan Williams took reps with the first team guys and look good during the 11 on 11 drills. WR Rashawn Scott has made a few great catches every practice and today was no different, Golden said that Scott and Williams have good chemistry, I just hope this momentum carries into the season. Phillip Dorsett was in action today, and he caught a few passes underneath with the first string guys.

Kevin Olsen had a good day as well. We didn't get to see as much from him in the 11 on 11 type of setting, but he did connect with TE Standish Dobard for a long touchdown. Speaking of Dobard he's looked good in the limited time I have watched him this spring. He looks like he's in good shape and his body seems to be moving better because of it.

KC McDermott and Trevor Darling were still working with the second team guys but looked good.

Sunny Odogwu was also working at right tackle with the second team but opened up a bit to us after practice. He says he's made strides in every aspect of his game. He also said he may have lifted weights "once or twice" before coming to UM and that at times last season he did feel a bit overwhelmed. Now some things about Sunny you may find interesting, he likes to go riding on his specially made mountain bike. The frame and tires are custom ordered to deal with his size. When he's not biking you can find him on the golf course or in the YOGA STUDIO. Yup, let that one sink in. It's common for football players to do yoga and palates but at 6-8, 330 I will never not find that funny.

On Special teams, Matt Goudis is still the kicker but he's also been working on his punting. Right now Goudis and Ricky Carroll are competing for the job of punter but Golden mentioned that UM will have some walk ons competing come summer time. Just remember, Pat O'Donnell was a freak and it may be a good time to adjust your expectations.

On defense there is a reason why Alex Figueora is a fan favorite, and today it was on display. With the "Thud, hard contact drills" it puts the defense at a disadvantage, and Fig didn't seem to enjoy holding back. The look on his face let you know he wasn't happy with some of the extra running yards the defense was giving up. It wasn't a temper tantrum or anything negative, it was the look you want from a linebacker.

The new guys Juwon Young, Darrion Owens, and newly added Trent Harris all did well today with the second team. The coaching staff was impressed and said Harris fit right in.

Dallas Crawford is continuing to impress at safety, the coaching staff had nothing but high praise for him today.
