3 Keys: Canes Vs Wake on Senior Day

Miami's postseason chances may be slim, but winning on Senior Day would be a nice way to close the season. Here are the keys to closing out the season victorious.

Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

Rion Brown, Garrius Adams, Raphael Akpejori, Erik Swoope, Donnavan Kirk, and Justin Heller close out their regular season careers today.

Kudos to UM for this fitting tribute.

What will it take for them to win their final game at the BUC?

Here are the keys:

#1 Contain Travis McKie. McKie has spent the majority of his career in anonymity, mostly because the Deamon Deacons haven't won a thing in his four years. Unfortunate to say the least. McKie can score in bunches when he is on. Last season he gave the Hurricanes fits, when they were the #2 team in the country. Players similar to McKie, like Virginia Tech's Jarrell Eddie and NC State's TJ Warren (albeit he is on another level) have given Miami trouble this season. McKie is a an excellent and underrated player who is capable of beating UM single-handed if he goes off. Stopping him HAS to be priority 1.

#2 Keep the Emotions in Check. Senior day is something special to behold on any college campus. Student athletes pour their hearts and souls into all that goes with the 4, 5, and sometimes 6 years on campus they spend with a program. When the reality hits that they are playing their last game in their home arenas, usually in front of scores of friends and family, emotions are bound to come to the forefront. This can be a good thing or a bad thing. Playing with passion is never a bad thing, but playing with composure in key spots is also important.

#3 Get to the line and Convert! How exactly do you shoot 50% from the field and turn the ball over only 5 times and still lose? When you shoot just 2 for 8 from the charity stripe as the 'Canes against Clemson Tuesday Night, it can erase a good shooting night and a mostly efficient offensive performance. Miami must push the ball inside and draw fouls, then make their free throws. Garrius Adams, Rion Brown, and Erik Swoope will be the key performers in this category.

Well there you have it folks, your three keys to today's game.
