Midway through the year, with conference members having played at least six games, divisional outlooks are gaining clarity. As the race to Charlotte continues on, some members are finding themselves looking from the outside, if not eliminated completely. Before we rank each ACC member, we'll examine the makeup of the Coastal Division.

The Outsiders

The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (2-5, 0-4 ACC) suffered their fourth consecutive conference loss, including three losses to Coastal opponents. Barring a complete meltdown in the Coastal Division, the Yellow Jackets won't be returning to Charlotte this year.

After a 30-20 loss to Miami, the Virginia Tech Hokies fell to 1-2 in the ACC and 3-4 overall. There's still hope for the Hokies, but that requires a near spotless record to end the year and losses from other Coastal members.

The Contenders

The Duke Blue Devils (5-1, 2-0 ACC) are undefeated early in ACC play. With a matchup with Virginia Tech this weekend, Duke has five Coastal games and a cross-divisional bout with Wake Forest remaining on the schedule. Duke's success has been reliant on its staunch defensive play, one that currently ranks 4th overall in total defense.

The Hurricanes (4-2, 1-1 ACC) kept their Coastal Division title hopes alive with a win over Virginia Tech.

The Virginia Cavaliers (2-4, 1-1 ACC), despite being trounced by its tough non-conference opponents, are in contention for the Coastal Division. The Cavaliers notched an overtime victory over Syracuse to stay in the hunt.

Pittsburgh (5-1, 3-0) is proving to be a contender without the 2014 ACC Player of the Year, running back James Conner. The Panthers are finding success behind improved defensive play, which ranks 17th in total defense. Last Saturday, however, the Panthers narrowly escaped Atlanta, winning 31-28 over Georgia Tech.

After a loss to South Carolina to begin the season, North Carolina (5-1, 2-0 ACC) tore through its remaining non-conference games and that momentum carried over into ACC play. The Tar Heels hold conference wins over Georgia Tech and Wake Forest, and welcome the Virginia Cavaliers to Chapel Hill this Saturday.
