Miami Baseball's Steak Ends at 9 in 5-4 Defeat to Virginia

Richard Lewis/Miami Athletics

The 'Canes came into tonight with an RPI ranking of #2, not mention a top 10 standing in ever major poll, but they faced a pretty desperate Virginia squad.

Clearly on the bubble,  UVA jumped ahead early and held on late, to end Miami's 9 game winning streak with a 5-4 win in Charlottesville.

Thomas Woodrey started for UM and struggled early, as the 'Canes fell behind 4-1 after 5 innings.

In the top of the 7th, UM scored to twice to cut the lead to 1, sparked by a Christopher Barr RBI triple.

The Hoos would add a run in the bottom of the eighth to make it 5-3.

Barr opened the top of the 9th with a double.  He would eventually score on a fielder's choice, but that was as close as the the Hurricanes would get.

Joe McCarthy finished with 3 hits and 2 runs scored for Virginia.

The teams resume play tomorrow at 1 PM.
