Miami Football 2015 Player Profile: Ryan Mayes

In an effort to keep even the most hardcore Miami fan up to date on their favorite players, SOTU will be running a Player Profile series. In these posts, our writers will profile players from each position that they think should get more face time. They will recap their previous year, or in some cases, preview what may be to come. That way, when the season get's here, you hopefully will have a new found love for the team on the field.

Ryan Mayes

RS Frosh - CB - 6'1 203 - Miami Northwestern H.S.

Competed in three contests last season, but still retained his RS status.

Impressed the staff last summer with his nose for the ball.   Followed that up with a great spring this year:

Has excellent size, and figures to start out camp as Miami's #4 CB behind Artie Burns, Tracy Howard, and Corn Elder.

Summary: UM frankly does not have great depth at CB. Some first year players may get in the mix this summer, but for now Mayes is a key/unknown factor at the position.  He does not appear to be the speediest of players based on limited film, but his size and closing ability seem to make up for it.  Mayes has similar physical attributes and skills to former Miami DB Ladarius Gunter.  But how well he plays (and he will play) will depend on how quickly he adjusts to the speed of the game at this level. At minimum he will be a factor on special teams. Whether he is solid or a liability on defense is yet to be determined.
