Miami Freshman Profile: Scott Patchan

In an effort to keep even the most hardcore Miami fan up to date on their favorite players, SOTU will be running a Freshman Profile series. In these posts, our writers will profile UM's newcomers for 2015. That way, when the season get's here, you hopefully will have a new found love for the team on the field.

Scott Patchan

DE - 6'6 238 - IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fl)

Selected Miami over FSU, Clemson, Notre Dame, Ohio State, and UCLA among others.

4 star recruit across the board.

Also has a bit of swag off the field and is certainly a bit outspoken.

Something tells me Hurricanes fans are going to love this guy.

Oh yeah, he's a beast on the field too.

Chances He Redshirts (1-10)   -  2

As part of this series we will evaluate if the given newcomer stands a chance to sit out his first season to retain eligibility.

This staff has shown they have no fear of playing true freshman, and it is hard to imagine Patchan doesn't get some run this year.

With the exception of RB Mark Walton, there is probably no recruit in the Class of 2015 who is more college ready than Patchan.  UM does have some pretty good, experienced DEs (Al-Quadin Muhammad, Chad Thomas, Ufomba Kamalu, among others) on the roster.  But I could see Patchan earning some snaps this season, and end up as a very good depth player nonetheless.

Summary: Patchan probably needs to add some weight to his frame to be a true every down 3-4 end. But he is well advanced with his technique (outstanding hands, swim move), is an outstanding athlete with a terrific first step, and plays with a relentless motor.  I've read where some have compared him to Anthony Chickillo, but I actually think Patchan is more explosive at this stage of his career than Chick was.  I could see 2-3 sacks and some solid play this year, and a much larger role down the line for the IMG Academy product.  The sky is the limit for this kid, hopefully he is used in a way that maximizes his potential.
