After being pegged as favorites to win the Coastal Division in the preseason, the reigning Coastal champs, the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, now sit behind the Duke Blue Devils in the race for Charlotte. Let's rundown the latest happenings in the Hurricanes' division before hitting the power rankings.
North Carolina continues to bulldoze its lesser opponents.
However, in the Tar Heels' matchup with the Delaware Blue Hens, they did so without senior quarterback Marquise Williams. Instead, Larry Fedora, unhappy with Williams play, sent out sophomore Mitch Trubisky late in the second quarter. Trubisky proved effective, throwing for 312 yards and four touchdowns on 17 of 20 passing. In his post-game conference, Fedora said, "there are no changes" regarding his starting quarterback, though Trubisky did much to improve his standing.
The Blue Devils defense is holding strong, making them an early leader in the ACC's Coastal Division.
Blue Devils' safety Jeremy Cash was the thorn in Justin Thomas and the Yellow Jacket's side, disrupting the option-attack and coming on strong late, forcing a Thomas fumble in the fourth with Georgia Tech attempting a comeback. Altogether, the Blue Devils' defense held the Yellow Jackets to its lowest rushing totals for the year, allowing just 173 rushing yards.
Georgia Tech faces early setbacks but, as is the nature of the division, is not out yet.
With the Yellow Jackets' offense misfiring, the defense is the lone bright spot from their defeat. Forcing three turnovers and allowing just 75 total yards to the Blue Devils in the second half, they gave the offense every chance to rebound. Georgia Tech's next opponent is division adversary North Carolina.
Virginia suffered its worst defeat of the year at the hands of Boise State.
Matt Johns' quarterback play was dangerous, throwing for four interceptions, including two pick-sixes. But this was an all-around poor performance by the Cavaliers. The Wahoos rushing attack was nonexistent, with its leading rusher, Daniel Hamm, totaling 22 yards on 8 carries. The defense couldn't match with the Broncos, being torn apart by Boise's pace in the spread, and allowing quarterback Brett Rypien to amass 321 yards.
