Miami Hurricanes Rooting Guide: Week 7

Yeah, you’re gonna root for Miami (duh). But here’s who ELSE you should be rooting for to help the Canes out this week.

Ok guys. I’m back with another rooting guide. Premise is simple: who in ACC games do I need to root for in order for Miami to have the greatest benefit.

Simple, really. Let’s begin.

North Carolina (4-2, 2-1 ACC) at #16 Miami (4-1, 1-1 ACC), Saturday, 3:30pm, ABC/ESPN2 (Regional split for National broadcast)

Big game in the ACC Coastal, this. UNC already has 2 ACC wins, but got BLOWN OUUUUUTTTTTTTT by Virginia Tech 34-3 last week. Miami is 1-1 after last week’s.....yeah. Both teams are in the hunt for the Coastal division championship, and stand in each other’s way this week. The winner of this game is in a good position. The loser will have 2 ACC losses and face an uphill climb, including lots of scoreboard watching, to get a chance to win the Coastal division.

Who to root for: Miami. I mean, duh.

Duke (3-3, 0-2 ACC) at #7 Louisville (4-1, 2-1 ACC), Friday, 7:00pm, ESPN

Duke is, again, an average outfit. Louisville is one of the most dynamic teams in America, led by the Lamar Jackson Death Machine at QB. Mismatch of epic proportions.

Who to root for: Louisville, just to see what kind of crooked numbers Lamar Jackson and company will put up against a team they’re favored to beat by 35 points.

North Carolina State (4-1, 1-0 ACC) at #3 Clemson (6-0, 3-0 ACC), Saturday, 12:00pm, ABC

North Carolina State is coming off a 10-3 win over Notre Dame played in a monsoon last weekend. Clemson is starting to look like the National Championship contender they were in 2015. This battle of undefeated ACC teams could is going to be one of the most watched games in the noon window. Clemson is in for a fight, and NCState is looking to shift the balance of power in the Atlantic, at least for an afternoon.

Who to root for: Clemson. Miami plays at NCState later this season, so seeing them lose again would give Mark Richt and company more ideas on how the Canes can beat the Wolfpack in November.

Georgia Southern (3-2) at Georgia Tech (3-3, 1-3 ACC), Saturday, 12:30pm, ACC Network (Regional)

Georgia Southern is a Sun Belt team who has a decent amount of G5 talent. Georgia Tech is scuffling after 3 straight losses, including a loss to Miami 2 weeks ago. GT coach Paul Johnson has been his typical ornery self after those losses, and GT will look to take that frustration out on Georgia Southern.

Who to root for: Georgia Tech. Another loss for them would be a big blow to Miami’s strength of schedule, and nobody wants that.

Pittsburgh (4-2, 1-1 ACC) at Virginia (2-3, 1-0 ACC), Saturday, 12:30pm, ACC Network (Regional)

This is a lowkey big game in the ACC Coastal. Pittsburgh, one of the top teams in the division, already has a loss, and Virginia, who looked like one of the worst teams in FBS early in the year, does not. So, depending on this game, we could have a team with 2 ACC losses and one with none, or two teams with 1 ACC loss each.

Who to root for: Virginia. There’s no way they continue to win through the rest of this season, but it’d be fun for them to put Pittsburgh behind the 8-ball early in the year.

Wake Forest (5-1, 2-1 ACC) at #14 Florida State (4-2, 1-2 ACC), Saturday, 3:30pm, ESPN

Wake Forest is the feel good story of the year, already one game away from bowl eligibility. Florida State is the devil incarnate.

Who to root for: Wake Forest. Fuck Florida State.

#17 Virginia Tech (4-1, 2-0 ACC) at Syracuse (2-4, 0-2 ACC), Saturday, 3:45pm, ESPNU

Virginia Tech is quietly building a nice season. Sure, they lost to Tennessee — a team with more talent than the Hokies, for sure — but they’re otherwise undefeated, and could be 3-0 in conference by 8pm Saturday. Syracuse, however, is at the other end of the spectrum, taking their lumps as they transition their team into Dino Babers’ version of the Baylor spread system. Oh, and as for defense, the next time Syracuse tackles somebody this year will be the first time.

Who to root for: Syracuse. I know it’s not going to happen, but for Miami to get back into top contention for the ACC Coastal, VT is going to need to lose another ACC game. So, hope for an upset, even though this probably isn’t going to happen.

Light week in the ACC this week, because most ACC teams are playing other ACC teams.

So, that’s your rooting guide for Week 7. Be great out there.
