Porter, citing sources, reports that Willis will have surgery to repair a torn MCL in his left knee and will not play in the Canes’ upcoming Bowl Game against West Virginia.
A former 5-star recruit from New Orleans, LA, Willis transferred to Miami from Florida in 2015. He sat out the 2015 season per NCAA transfer rules.
Willis was a solid, if unspectacular, player in his first season on the field for Miami. Should his season be over, as the report suggests, Wilis will end his 2016 season with 19 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, 1 PBU, and 1 QB hurry in 9 games.
Without Willis III, Miami will run starting DTs Kendrick Norton and RJ McIntosh, and backups Courtel Jenkins and Anthony Moten against West Virginia. Other players, such as little used 3rd string Ryan Fines, may also see time at DT in the Bowl Game, if necessary.
