Hey. Let’s get our day started with some Miami Hurricanes talk, shall we?
Canes trending up for RB McFarland
Starting with a quick recruiting note, according to 247sports, Miami is in the top group of schools for 4-star RB Anthony McFarland (Hyattsville, MD).
If you’ve read any of our Monthly Class Breakdowns — here’s the August edition for your edification — then you already knew that Miami, Alabama, and Maryland were the 3 schools at the forefront of McFarland’s recruitment. What you probably didn’t know is what 247sports just reported after interviewing McFarland ($): his mom’s preference is for the multi-talented RB to attend the University of Miami.
Now, obviously all recruiting news is to be taken with a grain, if not a mountain, of salt. While McFarland’s mother would prefer him to choose Miami, she’s not pushing him here. And, McFarland’s dad is a Canes fan, but also open to letting him choose his own path for his education and athletic future.
McFarland is an explosive player on the field, and can impact games in the run game or pass game as a receiver out of the backfield or from the slot. Unfortunately, he broke his leg in his HS’s preseason classic, and will miss the entirety of his senior year. Yet and still, Anthony McFarland is one of the top playmakers in the 2017 recruiting class, and Miami will stay engaged in his recruitment until the bitter end.
Florida State loses Derwin James for at least 5-7 weeks after knee surgery
One of the top players on FSU’s team will miss significant time following surgery. S Derwin James tore his meniscus in FSU’s 52-8 win over Charleston Southern last weekend. Our SBNation colleagues over at Tomahawk Nation had a full recap of this event:
Full info on Derwin James' surgery and recovery. 5 weeks would be a very aggressive timeline for a repair. https://t.co/HxMZq7LNcv
— Bud Elliott (@TomahawkNation) September 13, 2016
Spinning this forward, a 5-7 week recovery time — more commonly 6-8 weeks for this injury and the surgery James had (repair, not debridement) to fix the issue — means that James, one of the top defenders on FSU’s team, would surely miss the Miami-Florida State game on October 8th.
I usually like to focus only on The U and what we’re doing, but an injury of this magnitude (James was a preseason All American by nearly every outlet who named a team) matters. With or without James in the secondary, expect the October 8th rivalry game to showcase the best of both teams.
The University of Miami remains the top rated academic institution in the State of Florida
Not sports-related, but I’m a UM alum, and this makes me happy. For the 5th (6th?) year in a row, the University of Miami is the top rated academic institution in the State of Florida, according to U.S. News and World Report’s college rankings.
.@usnews ranks the University of Miami 44th in Best National Universities category, #1 in FL https://t.co/CECJmgKjv9 pic.twitter.com/rPaCkrdJIw
— University of Miami (@univmiami) September 13, 2016
As you can see, the University of Miami came in at 44th in the U.S. News and World Report rankings. For comparison, the University of Florida came in at 50th, and Florida State University came in at 96th.
Miami was tied for 44th with Wisconsin, UC Davis, UC San Diego, Illinois, and Lehigh. For the full U.S. News and World Report rankings, click here.
Another teaser for the (probable) Jersey Unveiling
So, adidas and UM athletics put out another post on social media teasing the (probable) unveiling of the redesigned jerseys.
Here at The U, earning your stripes is a big deal.

These men would know.

The numbers, which can be associated with past UM greats, seem to hint that the individuals who wore those numbers could be present for this event. And, according to Matt Porter of the Palm Beach Post, this event will be the jersey unveiling, and will be open to the public. Which is good enough for me.
I can’t wait to see the redesigned jerseys. Be sure to check back Monday evening, or swing by the Rathskellar to see them live an in person yourself!
MORE App State trash talk

First this statement from App State’s Coach on the David Glenn Show....
Satterfield, on Miami: We are fine with giving up a little size, but we are going to be able to make up for it in speed.

To which my response/reaction was...
The fact that AppSt can even dream of using SPEED to beat Miami is a further indictment of the Golden regime https://t.co/8CJTOoaPcu

And, for a bit of levity, here’s the hyperbolic embodiment of all the tweets about game attendance at Hard Rock/Sun Life/LandShark/Dolphin/ProPlayer/Joe Robbie Stadium and...whatever App State calls their field, courtesy of my good friend APDirtybird

Quick Hitters
CoachingSearch.com named Canes DL Coach Craig Kuligowski the national DL coach of the week following the 7 sack, 15 tackle for loss performance the Canes had against FAU.
Miami has been kind of good running the ball this year. How good? Look for yourself:

The ACC recently released the conference schedule for the 2016-17 Men’s Basketball season. Jerry takes a closer look at all the key games here.
Miami previously released the 2016-17 non-conference schedule, which you can see here.
That’s it for today.
And when I leave, come toge....nvm. They did it better on Chappelle’s Show.
