The 2016 HSFB season is well underway, and the players committed to the U have been using their talents with great success so far.

With 20 players in the 2017 recruiting class at this moment, Miami has one of the largest group of commits in America. Some of that group was unable to showcase their talents this week due to weather impacting games. Here’s your full recap:

QB N’Kosi Perry didn’t play last week. His game was canceled due to Hurricane Hermine. His Ocala (FL) Vanguard team will travel to Citra (FL) North Marion on Friday night. That is a game between 2 good teams with a ton of FBS level talent. Really interested to see how that one plays out.

QB Cade Weldon also had his game canceled due to Hurricane Hermine. His Tampa (FL) Jefferson team will face Tampa (FL) Sickles on Friday night.

RB Robert Burns and the Miami (FL) Gulliver Prep Raiders demolished Miami (FL) Somerset Academy 56-6. Unfortunately, there were no stats available for this game, but with a scoreline such as it was, I’m sure Burns’ appearance in the game was short lived.

WR Kevaughn Dingle and the Carol City (FL) Chiefs have started the year pretty rough. A talented team without a varsity level QB, the Chiefs lost to West Palm Beach (FL) Oxbridge Academy — freshman RB Travis Homer’s alma mater — 14-7 on Friday night. Obviously, Dingle’s stats will be depressed without a QB who can hit throws. Carol City was thought to be a State Championship contender, but the wheels are coming off for them early. They travel to Lakeland on Friday night and will need a miracle to keep from going 0-3 to start the year.

WR Evidence Njoku’s season began this past week as Wayne Hills (NJ) faced Pahokee (FL). Wayne Hills lost by a score of 34-23, and Njoku had 2 catches for 23 yards and a TD in the loss. Wayne Hills will look to bounce back this week as they face Franklin Hills (NJ) Ramapo on Friday night.

TE Brian Polendey and Denton (TX) Guyer lost to DeSoto (TX) 51-17. This game had an interesting subtext as Guyer’s former QB, Shawn Robinson, transferred to and now starts for DeSoto. I looked up the stats, and Guyer threw the ball 14 times for 20 yards total. Like I said last week, Polendey plays for a run-based team, so you shouldn’t expect huge numbers from him in the pass game this year.

OL Navaughn Donaldson and Miami (FL) Central laid the beatdown on Miami (FL) Killian 55-0. Killian lost EVERYBODY to Miami Southridge, so this score line isn’t crazy when facing, arguably, the best team in South Florida, if not America in Miami Central. The Rockets go on the road to face Jacksonville (FL) First Coast on Friday night.

OL Zach Dykstra and the Spirit Lake (IA) Indians kept their perfect season going, beating Forest City (IA) 23-12

OL Zalontae Hillery, ATH DeeJay Dallas and their Brunswick (GA) Glynn Academy Terrors ran their winning streak to 2 with a 33-14 win over Arvada (CO) Pomona. Dallas put on an offensive show again, registering several touchdowns. What, you want video? GOT YOU, FAM!

DT Jon Ford led the Dillard (FL) Panthers to a 23-16 win over Hallandale (FL).

DE Jonathan Garvin and the Lake Worth (FL) Trojans bounced back from last week’s loss to beat West Palm Beach (FL) Forest Hill 17-6. Garvin dominated yet again, with 10 tackles, 7 tackles for loss, and a sack.

DE D.J. Johnson and his Sacramento (CA) Luther Burbank Titans continued to scuttle out of the gate, falling to 0-3 after a 42-14 loss to Sacramento (CA) Grant. Johnson did what he could, though, with 8 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, and 2 catches for 30 yards on offense.

LB Waynmon Steed was a playmaker on defense for the previously mentioned Miami (FL) Central Rockets in their 55-0 shutout victory over Miami (FL) Killian.

LB Bradley Jennings Jr. was another player whose game was canceled due to weather. His Jacksonville (FL) Sandalwood will host Jacksonville (FL) Atlantic Coast on Friday.

DB Trajan Bandy and ATH Christopher Henderson and the Miami (FL) Columbus Explorers lost to Miami (FL) Northwestern 19-14 on Thursday night. A State Championship contender in Florida’s 8A classification, Columbus looks to rebound against Miami (FL) Southridge on Friday night.

DB Billy Gibson and Miami (FL) Southridge cruised to a 39-0 victory over Miami (FL) Dr. Krop last week. They will have their biggest game of the season on Friday as they travel to play Miami (FL) Columbus. This game is massive for both teams as they look to build a case as State Championship contenders.

DB Brian Edwards and the Miramar (FL) Patriots fell to Ft. Lauderdale (FL) St. Thomas Aquinas 42-6. While the score was lopsided, the game was much closer than the score would lead you to believe. But, in the end, Miramar mistakes and St. Thomas’ impressive depth led to the Raiders extending the game out to the score you see. Miramar will look to bounce back against Coconut Creek (FL) Monarch on Friday.

P Zach Feagles, who plays FB for Ridgewood (NJ) Maroons when not kicking, have their season opener this upcoming week. They open on September 9th vs Hackensack (NJ).

That’s it for this week. We’ll be sure to check back in next week to see how the current Canes commits are faring in their 2016 seasons.
