Season Review: Darrion Owens

Finding his role after knee surgery

In the first quarter if the FAU game in 2015 Darrion Owens sustained an injury to his right knee that would require reconstructive surgery. A surgery that would take him a year to recover from. In fall camp it just did not look like he full trusted his knee the way he would need to to be able to compete at an ACC level. He came back to practice and was running second unit at weak side OLB behind freshman Michael Pickney. With Jermaine Grace have been dismissed from the team Manny Diaz’s unit would need all the depth they could get.

Owens returned to live game action almost a year to the day of being injured verse FAU, 364 days to be exact. Against, who else, FAU. It was an emotional comeback and Owens recorded 2 solo tackles on limited snaps in a 38-10 victory in front of an energized and wet Hard Rock crowd.

Owens finished the season with 17 tackles and played in 12 of the Canes 13 games.

The Future

While Owens was injured, at no fault of his own, we saw some growth and potential of Michael Pickney, Shaq Quarterman, and Zach McCloud. The position is not deep behind that though. Owens will be counted on in a big spot next season and will be ready.

Go Canes.
