Hurricanes Baseball has had quite a few players be named to Preseason All-American Teams. Let's take a look at which players received honors.
Jesse Lepore
Lepore has been named to a few Preseason All-American teams this year, and deservedly so. Lepore and fellow Preseason All-American Michael Mediavilla look to anchor a young UM rotation this year. Jesse is coming off a season where he went 9-0 as Miami’s midweek starter and posted a strong 2.20 ERA. Jesse actually went to my High School and it is nice to see him doing well.
His Honors:
Named to 2017 National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Preseason All-American Team.
Named to Collegiate Baseball Newspaper’s Preseason All-American Second-Team
Michael Mediavilla
Michael comes off a strong season anchoring UM’s rotation in which he went 11-2 and posted a 3.40 ERA. Last year’s season resulted in an All-ACC Third-Team selection so it is no surprise to see Mediavilla named a Preseason All-American this year. Hopefully Michael and Jesse can anchor a very strong rotation, but you can read that in our season preview.
His Honors:
Named to 2017 National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Preseason All-American Team.
Named to Collegiate Baseball Newspaper’s Preseason All-American Second-Team
Johnny Ruiz
Johnny figures to be a cornerstone piece for the Miami team this year after a strong Junior season. Ruiz was selected in the 2016 MLB Draft but instead chose to return to UM to improve his stock. Johnny is by far UM’s best returning offensive player in the infield, and will be relied upon to lead and provide support for a young lineup. It is no surprise to see him here after a strong season where he batted .342 and was named to the All-ACC Second-Team
His Honors:
Named to 2017 National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Preseason All-American Team.
Named to Collegiate Baseball Newspaper’s All-American Third-Team
Carl Chester
Chester was a very strong player for UM last year as he posted a .336 Batting Average. This year Chester looks to be the equivalent of Johnny Ruiz for the outfield as he is the only returning starter in the OF for Miami. Carl is an on base threat and led the team with 16 steals last year, and it is nice to see him getting recognition for what he provides on the team.
His Honors:
Named to 2017 Baseball America Preseason All-American Third-Team.
