Hurricanes 7, NC State 5: Sweep Avoided

The Hurricanes avoided a sweep on Sunday

NCAA Baseball: College World Series-Miami vs UC Santa Barbara Bruce Thorson-USA TODAY Sports

The Hurricanes avoided a sweep by defeating the North Carolina State Wolfpack 7-5 on Sunday.

The Wolfpack took an early lead in the bottom of the first after a two-run homerun to leftfield.

In the top of the second Miami managed to respond. Romy Gonzalez reached on an error and then moved to second after an errant throw. Gonzalez then moved to third when Michael Burns hit a groundout. Another hit from Brandon Gali, this time a RBI single, scored Romy Gonzalez from third. Brandon Gali then stole second, and two consecutive walks from Randy Batista and Chris Barr loaded the bases for Joe Gomez. Gomez came through with a two-RBI single that stayed just fair. James Davison then hit a RBI single to give Miami a 4-2 lead. Unfortunately later in the inning Miami missed another opportunity with the bases loaded.

In the top of the third Miami struck again. Michael Burns led off the half-inning with a nice single that dropped into rightfield. Randy Batista was then hit by a pitch, and Miami had two men on with one out. Chris Barr then drew his second walk of the afternoon to load the bases for Joe Gomez again. A wild pitch during Gomez’s at-bat scored Burns from third and advanced every runner, and Joe Gomez hit a RBI groundout to drive in another run. James Davison then reached on an error, and with the bases loaded NC State dropped a fly-ball which scored another run, but James Davison was tagged out on a play at the plate trying to score the second run of the play. By the time NC State got out of the inning Miami led 7-2.

In the bottom of the fifth NC State mounted a small rally. The lead off man got aboard after a walk, and the runner moved to second on a groundout where the only play was to first. A bad throw from third scored the run from second to make the game 7-3, and the batter made it all the way to third. A RBI groundout plated the runner from third, and the game was 7-4 in favor of Miami.

In the bottom of the seventh NC State made the game slightly closer. After an infield single a RBI double scored the runner all the way from first, and Miami’s lead was cut to just two as the game was now 7-5.

In the bottom of the ninth Frankie Bartow closed out the game, and Miami took the game 7-5.
