The Hurricanes beat the Florida Atlantic Owls 7-5 on Wednesday in the midweek game.

The Hurricanes struck quickly in the bottom of the first. A two out single from Carl Chester followed by a walk gave Miami two men on with two outs. An RBI single to right from Michael Burns scored the first run of the game. After that two consecutive RBI singles from Brandon Gali and Edgar Michelangeli gave Miami a 3-0 lead at the end of the inning.

In the bottom of the second Joe Gomez got a hold of a baseball and sent it to leftfield for a solo shot, and Miami led 4-0, but the inning wasn’t over yet. Johnny Ruiz then knocked a triple into the rightfield corner, and Carl Chester sent a pitch over the fence in left to give Miami an early 6-0 lead. WE HAD TWO HOMERUNS IN AN INNING!

In the bottom of the fourth Miami tacked on another run. Joe Gomez started the rally with a one-out single, and after Randy Batista walked Carl Chester was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Romy Gonzalez then took a bases loaded walk to plate Miami’s seventh run of the night. Unfortunately the inning ended without another run.

In the top of the fifth Greg Veliz finally gave up his first hit of the night, and then quickly gave up his first run of the night after he allowed a RBI double. After that Jim Morris had seen enough of the youngster and called on Kevin Pimentel to enter the game. Pimentel came through for the last out of the inning and Miami led 7-1.

In the top of the ninth Jim Morris put in freshman Daniel Rivero, who gave up a two-run homerun, which caused Jim Morris to call on the bullpen for Frankie Bartow, who also gave up a two-run homerun, but he quickly recovered to end the game, and Miami won 7-5.

It was slightly worrying to see the bullpen nearly collapse at the end of the game, but Frankie recovered nicely, hopefully this win builds momentum heading towards a huge series at North Carolina this weekend.

The Hurricanes move to 10-11 (3-3 ACC) after the win.
