The Hurricanes lost 3-0 to # 14 Florida Gulf Coast on Wednesday.
The game was played relatively quickly, as it was a pitcher’s duel.
In the bottom of the first, a single followed by a walk gave FGCU two men on with no outs, and after a fly-out a walk loaded the bases, but Greg Veliz avoided any damage with two pop-outs.
In the bottom of the seventh, FGCU got a one out single to force Greg Veliz out of the game after 6.1 innings, he was replaced by Andrew Cabezas. Unfortunately Cabezas struggled again, a mishandled grounder gave FGCU runners at the corners, and after a botched squeeze attempt by FGCU that allowed Miami to get the runner running to second, Cabezas walked a man to load the bases. A two RBI single gave FGCU a 2-0 lead, and that was followed by an RBI double that gave FGCU a 3-0 lead. Cabezas was then replaced by Frankie Bartow, who worked out of the inning.
After that UM went 1-2-3 in the next two innings, and FGCU took the game 3-0.
This goes to show how you must execute on opportunities, Miami did have a few chances with men in scoring position, but they could never plate the run, and it ultimately came back to hurt them.
Andrew Cabezas also struggled once again. I am not sure why Jim Morris decided to bring a reliever that has been struggling lately into a game against a top-15 ranked opponent, but it ultimately led to Miami losing the game.
