Local S decommits, opens up scholarship slot for 2018

Carol City Randy Russell is back on the market.

On Tuesday afternoon, Carol City (FL) S Randy Russell decommitted from the University of Miami.

Russell is a well-regarded player among his peers, and has a solid skillset as an in the box Safety. As stated above, he has decommitted from Miami and will look elsewhere for his commitment.

Peter Ariz of CanesInSight.com reported that Russell was a take for Miami, and the Canes did not drop him from this class. Ariz further reported that Miami will not re-recruit Russell and move in another direction. My read on that is that Russell, while good, is not a priority for this class. If he were, Miami would stay engaged in this recruitment. But, they’re not, and that action proves the point, to me.

Furthermore, there’s been talk (even in the SOTU comments section) that Russell’s parents would prefer him to leave the city of Miami for college. That does happen in certain situations, so that wouldn’t surprise me if true.

Miami has plenty of targets on the board at DB, and there’s a wealth of talent at that position in South Florida for this class. While losing Russell’s commitment is a minor setback, Miami will replace him with a similar caliber player if not upgrade at this scholarships slot.

We wish Randy Russell all the best in his future endeavors, and look forward to seeing what Miami does to replace him and close the rest of the 2018 recruiting class.

More on recruiting in the near future.
