Miami Hurricanes Recruiting Radar: Paradise Camp 2017 preview

Setting the landscape for Paradise Camp

Paradise Camp is back

Hello again, ‘Crootin fans! We’re back, and it’s time to talk about Miami’s premier recruiting event:

Paradise Camp 2017

Throughout the last week, Miami Hurricanes Head Coach Mark Richt has announced a cavalcade of Canes legends who will return to campus and coach at this elite recruiting event. You can see the whole list in the link below:

Now, the main key component to any recruiting event is the collection of recruits who will be in attendance and participating. We’ll get there in a minute, I promise, but here’s a general overview of the events of the weekend:

Friday - Underclassmen day (class of 2020 and 2021); can be invited back to compete with the Upperclassmen on Saturday (several players had this happen last year, like DE/LB Jeremy Passmore and others)

Saturday - Main event. Invite only. This is where the above-mentioned group of UM legends will be seen and make their mark. There will be elite competition (last year several 5-star recruits said the talent at Paradise Camp was better than at Nike’s The Opening). Basically, if you’re looking for a recruiting event to attend, this is it.

This is last year’s Paradise Camp preview, with full itineraries for both days. I anticipate that this year’s schedule of events will be very similar if not the same.

With construction on the Carol Soffer Football Practice Facility ongoing on the Greentree Practice fields, Paradise Camp will take place on the Intramural Fields in front of Stanford Residential College (where I lived when I went to The U) on UM’s Coral Gables campus.

Now that I’ve said all that to lay the landscape of this weekend’s events, let’s get to talking about the players who will be in attendance. There will probably be a couple late surprises who show up.

Of the 2016 attendee list, there are 15 players currently committed to Miami. Of those committed players, 5-star RB Lorenzo Lingard is the vocal leader, and expect him to be recruiting the uncommitted or otherwise committed guys very, very hard throughout this weekend.

To my mind, the top targets of the non-Canes commits on the above list are:

  • DE Kayode Oladele - former FSU commit with a world of potential that he’s yet to unlock. Nigerian native is new to football. Think “defensive David Njoku”
  • WRs Tyquan Thornton and Elijah Moore - both have talent and are nearly uncoverable in 7v7 and 1v1 scenarios. Thornton has an offer and Moore will compete to try to get one. Performance in pads will likely be more telling for both these players.
  • CB Nigel Bethel - A player with speed and developing skill who has seen his profile rise recently.

And while that list is impressive, there will be additional depth and talent in the form of underclassmen who will be attending Paradise Camp as well.

2019 ATH Marcus Crowley 6'0" 165lbs Trinity Christian Academy (Jacksonville, FL)
2021 ATH Dedrick Smith 6'2" 150lbs Trinity Christian Academy (Jacksonville, FL)

There is a TON of talent in that underclassmen list. Diamante Howard and Jesiah Pierre are 2 Canes commits with plenty of talent. Akeem Dent is a former Canes commit who is the thought to be the best CB in his class. Keshawn King and Don Chaney Jr. are explosive RBs. Dontae Lucas, Michael Tarquin and the rest of the OL talent figures to be highly sought after. Josh Sanquinetti, Jashawn Sheffield and Jaylin Simpson offer top tier talent at skill positions.

The lists of talent, both senior and underclassmen, are loaded with talent. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. I can nearly guarantee that there are other players who are going to come to Paradise Camp who are keeping things quiet until they pop up in Coral Gables this weekend.

Nearly every 2018 commit attended Paradise Camp as an underclassman, so there has already been tangible results seen from this event.

Paradise Camp is a premium recruiting even, hosted at a premium location, coached by a premium coaching staff, and assisted by legends in the game of football. It, literally, doesn’t get any better than this.

We’ll have plenty of reaction, opinion, and commentary in the days following Paradise.
