In what would become another Canes/Noles “Instant Classic” game, the September 2009 edition of this long standing rivalry was the last time Miami beat Florida State. With a young quarterback on the road in Tallahassee on Labor Day, the Hurricanes offense under new offensive coordinator Mark Whipple and defensive coordinator John Lovett helped the Canes beat the Noles with a strong start the season. Fast forward to this season, Miami will have to travel to FSU early in the season to possibly test a young Canes quarterback. Can they get that magic back again?
In the 2009 game, Miami Sophomore, Jacory Harris, overcame numbness in his arm in the fourth quarter after a crushing sack by Greg Reid that led to a pick-6 for FSU and the lead with just over 11minutes to go in the game. Jacory however would shake it off finding running back Graig Cooper for a 24 yard touchdown pass to tie the game at 31. FSU would answer back with a field goal to go up 34-31 with 4:11 left in the contest and Harris came back on the field to strut Miami on a six play, 56 yard drive highlighted by a pass to Travis Benjamin for 40 yards to the FSU 3 with just under 2 minutes to go. Cooper would then punch it in for the game winning score. It was then up to the Miami defense, which battled to the final play when Florida State's Jarmon Fortson couldn’t make a catch in the end zone as time expired.
