Good morning. Miami had a HORRIFIC loss to Virginia on Saturday, and that sits squarely on Mark Richt.
Here’s what the Canes’ head coach had to say about that loss, the decision to bench N’Kosi Perry, and more, from Monday’s appearance on the Joe Rose Show:
Later today because of the bye week, Mark Richt's appearance on the Joe Rose Show on WQAM starts now.

Rose asks about QB switch first.
— StateOfTheU.com (@TheStateOfTheU) October 15, 2018
Richt "Perry was struggling. We were struggling offensively. I didn't like the way the game was going." Cites Rosier's experience in games as the reason for the switch.
Rose asks if quick hook will affect Perry's confidence
— StateOfTheU.com (@TheStateOfTheU) October 15, 2018
CMR "I think he'll be fine. He knows we have high regard for him." Says Perry will have a good career here. Says some things, but implies Perry has to develop "mental toughness"
Asked about the onside kick
— StateOfTheU.com (@TheStateOfTheU) October 15, 2018
CMR "If you get it, that's great. If you don't, that's a difference of about 15 yards. Unless what happened happens. That was worst case scenario for that"
"it certainly backfired on us. It's a decision I made and I have to own it"
Rose asks about OL struggles
— StateOfTheU.com (@TheStateOfTheU) October 15, 2018
CMR "there were more issues up from than you'd like during a game" but cites perimeter blocking and missed assignments (without clarification) as big issues, as well.
CMR "we've gotta get better"
— StateOfTheU.com (@TheStateOfTheU) October 15, 2018
CMR says a bye week after a loss is a blessing and curse. Time to wallow in failure but time to fix what ails you, as well.
— StateOfTheU.com (@TheStateOfTheU) October 15, 2018
Rose asks about play calling issues!!!
— StateOfTheU.com (@TheStateOfTheU) October 15, 2018
CMR "You've gotta soul search." Gotta be thorough in self-scouting (YO @romancane) and more.
Krantz asks what CMR thinks about people saying #Canes need a new playcaller.
— StateOfTheU.com (@TheStateOfTheU) October 15, 2018
CMR "make sure you're calling the right things. Offensive football is about 11 guys doing it right." Basically, if they did what they needed to do, the plays would work.
CMR hammering the "missed assignments" thing. Could be right. Is probably right. But it's also deflecting from the question.
— StateOfTheU.com (@TheStateOfTheU) October 15, 2018
Rose asks who will start at QB
— StateOfTheU.com (@TheStateOfTheU) October 15, 2018
CMR "we haven't met with our players yet" so he declines to comment further
Dear Lord, he’s gonna start Malik Rosier.......
Moving on
Rose asks if there will be lineup changes
— StateOfTheU.com (@TheStateOfTheU) October 15, 2018
CMR "at some positions, there aren't changes to make."
Says Donaldson-Scaife RG-RT moving forward. Will look at left side.
WRs gotta play. TEs gotta play. Nothing re: QB.
Rose asks about late-game penalties on last drive
— StateOfTheU.com (@TheStateOfTheU) October 15, 2018
CMR "The one Tito (Odenigbo) had wasn't very smart. He got pushed in the back and retaliated. You can't do that. He knows that. He's sick about it."
CMR "we could have gotten the ball back for another shot. But we didn't."
— StateOfTheU.com (@TheStateOfTheU) October 15, 2018
Asked about how the bye week will affect the team
— StateOfTheU.com (@TheStateOfTheU) October 15, 2018
CMR "we have a choice to make: to react if it's good or bad." says team needs to get back into the ACC Coastal race and get back to Charlotte for ACCCG.
CMR "Like Reggie Jackson said: they don't boo nobodies."
— StateOfTheU.com (@TheStateOfTheU) October 15, 2018
Nice joke. I'd prefer it if the team was winning and we could just cheer. That'd be nice.
Krantz highlights the performance of the Nation's #1 defense
— StateOfTheU.com (@TheStateOfTheU) October 15, 2018
CMR "Yeah it was great. They got after it." Cites Bandy personally for his effort in the game, and the stellar play to make that 2nd INT.
CMR also highlighted Jaquan Johnson, who came over to the spot of the INT and pulled the UVa receiver off the pile so Bandy could safely secure the ball as he and the WR were fighting for control. Just a great play by an elite defense in an otherwise horrible game for Miami.
Rose asks about recruiting in the aftermath of this game.
— StateOfTheU.com (@TheStateOfTheU) October 15, 2018
CMR "We feel great (about this class). There are a lot of great players committed. A couple silently committed (OH REALLY?!?!??!)." Says there are more guys who want to be in this class than spots available.
Silent commits, eh? Tell me more, tell me more!!
CMR also says several targets are still in the decision making process, which is understandable at this point.
