Canes Hoops junior center Dewan Hernandez (formerly Dewan Huell) was named to the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award Watch List. 20 candidates were selected by a national committee of top college basketball personnel. Here is the full list of candidates:

Hernandez is entering his third season in Coral Gables, after averaging 11.4 points and 6.7 rebounds per game in 2017-18, a season in which the Canes reached the NCAA Tournament for the third consecutive season.

The award, given out by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, is named after hall-of-famer Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and recognizes the top centers in men’s college basketball. The list will be narrowed down to 10 candidates in mid-February, and then to a final 5 in March. The winner will be announced at The College Basketball Awards in Los Angeles on April 12, 2019.

Canes Hoops begins their season with an exhibition game against Barry University at home on October 30th. The regular-season opener is November 9th at home versus Lehigh University.
