There will be a new assistant coach on the sidelines for Miami Hurricanes basketball the season.

Alvin ‘Pooh’ Williamson has come to Coral Gables to join Jim Larranaga’s staff.

Larranaga told hurricanesports.com in June, when Williamson was hired, that he was advised by fellow coach Tubby Smith to make the hire.

Williamson comes from the University of Memphis, where he was also an assistant for two season following stints at Texas Tech, TCU and SMU.

In 2006, Williams was an assistant at Wichita State during their NCAA Tournament run, where they were defeated in the Sweet 16 by Larranaga’s George Mason Patriots.

Before his time at Wichita State, he spent a year as an interim head coach at Tulsa—his alma mater— in 2004-05

His playing days from 1991-1995 saw him appear in 118 games with 7.2 points-per-game while shooting 40.7 from three.

The guard averaged double figures during his final two years with the Golden Hurricane.

Williamson will join Chris Caputo and Adam Fisher on Larranaga’s staff this season.
