Week 9 was a rough one for the “Sunshine Seven”. Of the six teams to make an appearance in week 9 (UCF had a bye week), 5 of them lost. The only win went to FIU, who pulled off a 37-18 victory against Western Kentucky.
In week 10, all seven teams will make an appearance. Among the seven games will be a rivalry (FAU-FIU) and multiple games with high stakes (Florida-Missouri and Duke-Miami). Before those, however, the power rankings for the state has to be decided.
#1. UCF Knights (LW: 1), Week 9 Result: BYE WEEK, Next Week: vs. Temple
It’s hard to put any team above UCF, even if the other team continues to win. The UCF win streak is now at 20 games (the longest in the nation) and the Knights truly have not had a hard time this season. The Knights will look to extend their win streak against Temple with McKenzie Milton returning to the starting lineup after an injury held him out against East Carolina.
#2. Florida Gators (LW: 2), Week 9 Result: 36-17 L vs. Georgia, Next Week: vs. Missouri
Week 9 ended the Gators’ 5-game win streak in blowout fashion. After an upset win against LSU, the Gators were demolished by Jake Fromm, who threw for 240 yards and 3 touchdowns. The Gators will look to get back on track against Drew Lock and the Missouri Tigers.
#3. FIU Panthers (LW: 5), Week 9 Result: 38-17 W @ Western Kentucky, Next Week: vs. Florida Atlantic
While FIU may not be the 3rd most talented team in Florida, they are the third best in Florida right now. Sitting at 6-2 and a perfect 4-0 in the conference, FIU were the only team in Florida to win in week 9. This week brings the Shula Bowl to the FIU campus, as they look to defeat the rival FAU Owls.
#4. Miami Hurricanes (LW: 4), Week 9 Result: 27-14 L @ Boston College, Next Week: vs. Duke
The Miami Hurricanes have had a lot of success under Mark Richt but right now, the Hurricanes are in a rough spot. For two straight weeks, the offense has failed to generate 20 points and for two straight weeks, the Hurricanes have had the field rushed against them. This week, the Hurricanes look to turn around their fortunes in a must-win game against Duke.
#5. South Florida Bulls (LW: 3), Week 9 Result: 57-36 L @ Houston, Next Week: vs. Tulane
After starting the season undefeated, the Bulls suffered a tough loss to Houston. The main performer for Houston was quarterback D’Eriq King, who had over 500 all-purpose yards and 7 touchdowns in the win. Looking to get back on the right foot, USF will host Tulane.
#6. Florida Atlantic Owls (LW: 6), Week 9 Result: 21-13 L vs. Louisiana Tech, Next Week: @ Florida International
After finishing with a C-USA title and Boca Raton Bowl win, Florida Atlantic has fallen back down to earth. This season, the Owls have looked poor in each of their losses and have struggled to gather any form of consistency. The Owls will look to keep their hopes of a bowl game alive with a win in the annual Shula Bowl.
#7. Florida State Seminoles (LW: 7), Week 9 Result: 59-10 L vs. Clemson, Next Week: @ North Carolina State
Willie Targett’s time in Tallahassee has been downright poor. With high hopes coming into the season, the Seminoles are fighting for a bowl game. Needing two wins in the last four games, the Seminoles will need two wins against ranked opponents. They’ll start this run with NC State on the road.
