Canes Hoops Player Profile: Rodney Miller

While redshirting this season, Miller should play an elevated role next season in the frontcourt for the Canes

NCAA Basketball: Miami at Pittsburgh Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

Rodney Miller came onto the Miami Hurricanes basketball team as a four star top 100 freshman for the 2016-17 year. Coming out of the talent rich New York City basketball scene, Miller spent his senior year at hoops powerhouse Oak Hill Academy.

We’ve viewed Rodney as a long term growth prospect when he arrived in Coral Gables as the 7 footer came in a bit raw and in need of a more formal conditioning program. Seeing limited action the past two years, Miller embarked on getting better shape in the off season and the coaching staff raved about his progress.

However, with a crowded frontcourt of Ebuka Izundu, Sam Waardenberg, Deng Gak and Dewan Hernandez (the hoops player formerly known as Dewan Huell) it was evident that Miller likely wouldn’t see meaningful minutes.

After a long conversation with Miami Coach Jim Larranaga, they decided to redshirt Miller for the upcoming year. This is allow him to progress his game and re-enter the lineup next year in an elevated role since Izundu is graduating and the Canes will need him to contribute at the 5 slot.
