Canes Hoops: Dewan Hernandez Held Out For Eligibility Review

The junior center’s eligibility is being looked at by the school and the NCAA.

Ahead of the Canes’ first official game of the season, the University of Miami Athletic Department revealed that junior center Dewan Hernandez would not be suiting up against Lehigh with the following statement:

“University of Miami junior Dewan Hernandez will be withheld from competition as the University and the NCAA review his eligibility.”

While the outcome of the situation is still to be determined, this is not something Canes fans wanted to hear. Hernandez was one of Miami’s leading scorers and leading rebounder in 2017-18, and was expected to be a focal point of this year’s squad. If he has to be held out for a significant amount of time, the Canes will be left with a big hole in the paint. Ebuka Izundu replaced Hernandez in the starting lineup Friday evening, putting up a solid outing of 10 points and 9 rebounds. In the meantime, more of the burden will fall on fellow starters Chris Lykes, Anthony Lawrence II, Dejan Vasiljevic, and Sam Waardenburg.

Stay tuned for more information on the situation as it develops.
