Miami Hurricanes F Dewan Huell declares for NBA draft, will not hire agent

Another Miami player has declared for the NBA Draft

NCAA Basketball: Duke at Miami Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

On Monday afternoon, Miami Hurricanes F Dewan Huell announced on social media that he is declaring for the NBA Draft, but will not hire an agent to retain his collegiate eligibility.

The 21 year old Huell started all 32 games for the Hurricanes in 2017-18. He averaged 11.4 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 1.0 blocks per game on .576 % FG and .689 FT% shooting lines.

A 5-star recruit from Miami (FL) Norland HS, Huell arrived in Miami with tons of fanfare. He has been a solid player over his 2 years in Miami, with flashes of brilliance and stretches of malaise, as well. Getting Huell was part of Miami’s program-best 2 year recruiting run, that saw G Bruce Brown Jr. (who has already declared for the NBA Draft), PG Chris Lykes, and G Lonnie Walker IV all join the Canes. Walker IV is still mulling his NBA Draft decision at the time of publish.

This is a mild shock, but since Huell has not hired an agent, he has the option to withdraw his name from the NBA Draft and return to school. That is a one-time option, however, so if he comes back and then declares again next year, that’ll be it.

For a team without any incoming recruits or transfers, this could be a big blow for Miami. But, that’s a bit of conversation we’ll have to revisit once Huell’s final decision whether to stay in the draft or return to school is known.

For now, I wish Dewan Huell the best through the NBA Draft combine and evaluation process. I hope he gets honest feedback about his game, and make a good and wise decision, regardless of what that decision is.
