Pitt 2, Miami 1: Heartbreak

The Hurricanes lost a game they needed to win Friday.

The Miami Hurricanes are 16-21 (9-10 ACC) after losing a must win game to the Pittsburgh Panthers. The Hurricanes desperately needed to take advantage of a good opportunity to sweep a series this weekend, and with the loss today that’s out of reach.

The storyline of this game was the pitching. Pittsburgh had six hits, but were limited to just two runs. While Miami had just three hits and could manage only one run. The Hurricanes got a lead in the first inning. Freddy Zamora was hit by a pitch, stole second, reached third on a fly-out, and scored on a wild pitch to give Miami their only run of the day. For the whole rest of the game Miami would be shut down by Pittsburgh’s pitching staff.

A single and a triple in the top of the third tied the game at 1. Jeb Bargfeldt looked good all game, but he couldn’t get any run support from his lineup. Miami still couldn’t manage to get a run across in the late stages of the game, and it finally came back to haunt them in the top of the ninth. Ron Washington Jr. would launch a solo homerun that gave Pittsburgh the decisive 2-1 lead, it was the only hit Daniel Federman allowed in relief.

Miami struck out just four times tonight, and they worked good counts, all signs of progress. However, they just couldn’t get balls to go their way. The few times the bounce did go their way, they couldn’t take advantage. The Mark Light Magic worked against Miami tonight, and now they find themselves in a situation where their next two games decide their season. Both will come as part of a doubleheader on Saturday. Ultimately, the entire season will come down to just one Saturday afternoon.
