The Hurricanes Baseball team is 18-25 (11-13 ACC) after getting a win against the Florida State Seminoles Sunday. The win meant Miami avoided getting swept by their hated rival, and it also meant that FSU Head Coach Mike Martin didn’t break the NCAA wins record against Miami.
The Hurricanes finally got a lead against the Seminoles in the top of the second, when Hunter Tackett knocked a sac-fly that scored Michael Burns. Things flipped in the bottom half of the inning though. FSU loaded the bases, and a wild pitch, single, and RBI groundout gave FSU a 3-1 lead.
The top of the fifth saw a response from Miami. Freddy Zamora and Tyler Paige both reached base, and Isaac Quinones knocked a rare Miami homerun to right field. Giving Miami a 4-3 lead.
In the top of the sixth Miami got a rally going. They loaded the bases off two singles and a walk, and two consecutive bases loaded walks scored Miami’s fifth and sixth runs. A well hit ball from Romy Gonzalez managed to bounce off the glove of the shortstop and leak into centerfield to score two more for the ‘Canes and make the game 8-3.
The Hurricanes added two more in the top of the seventh. Dylan Cloonan reached on a single, and Ray Gil drove him in with a well hit double. Freddy Zamora would then reach on a single, and Isaac Quinones would drive in Miami’s tenth run with an RBI single that made the game 10-3.
Miami would score their eleventh and final run in the top of the eighth. Dylan Cloonan reached for the fifth time in the game with a double to right field, and a walk form Michael Burns gave Miami two men on. A passed ball would let Cloonan score, and after that Miami put Frankie Bartow on the mound to seal the game.
Bartow allowed two runs in the bottom of the ninth, but the lead was so large that it didn’t really matter and Miami avoided the sweep. It was nice to see a little fight from the Hurricanes, but unless they go on a miracle run it really won’t matter.
