The Hurricanes got a great start out of the senior starter.

The Miami Hurricanes are 19-25 (11-13 ACC) after a Star Wars Night win over Bethune Cookman. Miami got a great performance out of senior Jeb Bargfeldt, who led the Hurricanes to the win.

Miami got off to a fast start, putting up a run in the bottom of the second. Three singles in a row loaded the bases for Hunter Tackett, and he would drive a ball to left field to score the Hurricanes’ first run of the night. Miami would add more on in the bottom of the third. A Freddy Zamora single followed by an Isaac Quinones walk gave Miami two men on with one out. Michael Burns would then come up clutch in the next at-bat and drive a knock that scored both of the runners and made the game 3-0.

After the early scoring from Miami, Jeb Bargfeldt settled in and put together a terrific outing. Retiring BCU in order in the first, fourth, and fifth innings. The strong performance allowed Miami to increase the lead in the fifth. Willy Escala reached on a walk, and Romy Gonzalez followed with a single to bring Michael Burns to the plate. Burns knocked a grounder to third, which meant that Escala was out, but the throw to second sailed into the outfield and put runners on the corners for Danny Reyes. Reyes took advantage of the opportunity, and belted a ball off the wall in left to score Miami’s fourth run of the night.

In the top of the sixth BCU finally got on the board. A triple put Jeb Bargfeldt in a tough spot, and he couldn’t manage to prevent damage, when a sac-fly made the game 4-1. Later, in the top of the eighth, an infield single scored the Wildcats’ second run, and that spelled the end for Jeb after 7.2 innings of solid work.

Bargfeldt was replaced by Frankie Bartow, and the experienced reliever quickly worked out of the inning to keep Miami in the lead. After the ‘Canes couldn’t muster any offense in the bottom of the eighth Bartow was out to pitch in the ninth. Frankie didn’t allow anything and Miami took the game 4-2.

It was really nice to see Miami finally take advantage of a strong pitching performance, and it would be nice for them to do that more often as the season winds down. The Hurricanes still have pride to play for, and a nice run to end the season, and maybe a bit of a run in the ACC Tournament, would be a good way to build for next year.
