Miami adds another talented defender to the 2019 recruiting class

Another talented pass rusher for the Canes’ DL? That’ll work.

The Miami Hurricanes added more talent to the 2019 recruiting class on Wednesday night when Vero Beach (FL) Defensive End Jahfari Harvey committed to the Canes.

A talented 6’3” 225lb defender, Harvey brings good size, quick twitch athleticism, and very good production with him to the Canes. Formerly at John Carroll Catholic, Harvey filled the stat sheet in 2017 with 91 tackles, 12 sacks, and scored 2 defensive touchdowns. A first team all-area player, Harvey proved his worth on the field time and again.

Despite that elite performance, Harvey has largely been an unknown in the recruiting world. Maybe he could have gone to more camps, but for a player of his size and caliber to be unrated by the major recruiting services (to be fair, he is rated as a 3-star on 247sports) at this time is not the norm.

Since transferring to Vero Beach this spring, Harvey’s recruitment has taken on new life. Teams from all over the country have evaluated and offered the talented edge rusher. This is to be expected for a player of Harvey’s caliber. He’s the #1 player in the Treasure Coast area according to TCPalm.com, and a major P5 prospect.

New Canes DL coach Jess Simpson quickly evaluated Harvey as one of the top players on the board at DE for this cycle, and moved to build a relationship with the player. Having had multiple coaches visits, and having been to Miami for the inaugural Miami Nights invite-only recruiting event, Harvey quickly got the clear picture that Miami was after him — HARD.

While he had initially said that a decision would be coming later in the summer, Harvey had seen all he needed to see following his recent visit to Miami. That lead to him moving up his announcement date, and also to today’s commitment to Miami.

While his rating may not reflect it at this time (check back toward the end of the cycle for a more accurate reflection of his talents and skills), Harvey’s offer list is elite. He committed to Miami over offers from Michigan, Georgia, Georgia Tech, North Carolina State, Boston College, Nebraska, and Oregon, to name a few. Harvey claims 21 total offers at this time, which is emblematic of the kind of talent he has.

For the Canes’ 2019 recruiting class, Harvey is the 16th commitment overall and the 2nd Defensive End. He joins Hollywood (FL) Chaminade-Madonna DE Cam Williams at that position group in this class.
