More good news for the Hurricanes as they gear up for the upcoming 2018 season. Two defensive players are gaining even more recognition.

Safety Jaquan Johnson and linebacker Shaq Quarterman were both named to the CBS Sports Preseason All-American team. Johnson received first-team honors, while Quarterman was placed on the second-team.

Johnson was the leader of the Miami defense in 2017 as a junior, and led the team with 96 tackles. Johnson also had four interceptions, running one back for a touchdown. Last season, the former Miami Killian star was a second-team All-American as well as second-team All-ACC.

Quarterman, who is the head of a talented linebacker unit, also had a successful 2017 campaign. Quarterman was second on the Canes with 83 tackles last year, and also recorded 2.5 sacks. The incoming junior and Orange Park native joined Johnson as a second-team All-ACC selection in 2017, and has started all 26 games during his UM career.

Johnson and Quarterman are the first Hurricanes to crack CBS’ preseason All-American list since Duke Johnson made an appearance in 2014.

Four ACC players made the first-team list, and nine total players from the conference made the list altogether. Two of those players who Johnson and Quarterman will see this fall was Boston College’s running back A.J. Dillon, and Cam Akers, running back from FSU.
