It’s pretty obvious that Al Blades Jr. has expectations to hold at Miami. Not only was he a highly recruited freshman from Miami’s backyard, but he’s also another generation of talent from the Blades family. However, this week marked an important week at the defensive back’s journey at The U and possibly his football career.

In a recent report by Fox Sports, Blades was surprisingly announced to be the captain in the Hurricanes’ match up against Toledo alongside Joe Jackson, Hayden Mahoney and Sheldrick Redwine. Though this is a huge moment for the young cornerback, he’s been slowly proving that he’s ready for title. He’s had two tackles in the Hurricanes’ season opener loss to LSU, and managed to finesse another in last week’s game against Savannah State. So it’s clear that this season will be crucial to his development as a player, but being marked as a captain will test him as a leader.

If you’re not hip about this family, the Blades have several members that were prime talent at Miami for decades. Al Blades Jr’s father, Sr., was a lock down DB that helped pave the way for DBs like Ed Reed, while Brian and Benny won a ring in 1987. This doesn’t include the work these three would later put in on an NFL field.

According to the post, the Hurricanes usually decide the team’s official captains each game, but this week gives Blades the opportunity to take ownership in being named a captain for the team against Toledo.
