Canes Football: News and Notes from Coach Richt’s Press Conference

Quarterbacks and injuries dominate the questions for CMR

The Miami Hurricanes are now 3-1 heading into Atlantic Coast Conference play after a 31-17 win at home against the FIU Panthers.

As the young guys continue to integrate into the team on Saturdays, several storylines unfolded this weekend— including who will play the quarterback position and how injured players are holding up.

On N’Kosi Perry’s entrance: “It was scheduled he was going to go third series. Things went well so we kept him in there. Overall he did a really good job. There’s some valuable experience for N’Kosi tonight.

“He threw some really fine passes...he did scramble some times and got us some first downs. I think he was comfortable. Was he perfect, no. But he did some really good things.”

On the overall development on the backup QBs: “Cade [Weldon] and N’Kosi are growing up. Part of the reason they weren’t getting these opportunities [last year] is because they were still a little immature. They kind of broke through in the spring...getting closer to being a guy who could play play for us.

Important to note that Richt said that in practice this week, each of the top three QBs got an equal amount of reps with the first and second teams.

On Jeff Thomas’ exit: “Jeff had dehydration. Jeff had a kick return, a punt return, was running routes...it got to him. We kept him out, more for precaution...he feels fine [as of Saturday night].”

On Mike Harley, Thomas’s replacement: “[He] played great...a guy that our coaching staff loves. “[During Tuesday’s practice] everyone was kind of dragging around...he [Harley] is the one that rallies the team and says ‘let’s go.’”

Overall though, “we had a victory and that was great. All victories are sweet.”
