NCAA Basketball: Syracuse at Duke Rob Kinnan-USA TODAY Sports

ACC Basketball Power Rankings: 1/15

1. Virginia Cavaliers (LW: 2) 15-0 (3-0)

Last Week: W @ BC 83-56, W @ Clemson 63-43; Next Week: vs VT 1/15, @ Duke 1/19

Number of the week: 51.2 - average points allowed by the #1 ranked defense in the country. The Cavaliers have always been known for their strong defense, and this season is no exception.

2. Duke Blue Devils (LW: 1) 14-2 (3-1)

Last Week: W @ WF 87-65, W @ FSU 80-78, L vs Syracuse 91-95; Next Week: vs UVA 1/19

Number of the week: 68 - number of points scored by RJ Barrett and Zion Williamson in Duke’s loss to Syracuse. Barrett and Williamson are absolutely lethal, but the Blue Devils are still beatable despite their star power.

3. Virginia Tech Hokies (LW: 3) 14-1 (3-0)

Last Week: W @ GT 52-49; Next Week: @ UVA 1/15, vs Wake 1/19, @ UNC 1/21

Number of the week: 5.8 - average assists per game for Justin Robinson, which ranks 2nd in the conference. The Hokies need to continue to take care of the ball to get past the likes of UVA and UNC next week.

4. North Carolina Tar Heels (LW: 4) 12-4 (2-1)

Last Week: W @ NC State 90-82, L vs Louisville 62-83; Next Week: vs ND 1/15, @ Miami 1/19, vs VT 1/21

Number of the week: 21 - margin of defeat against Louisville. The Tar Heels outscore their opponents by 17 points on average, so their performance last Saturday was a worst-case scenario.

5. NC State Wolfpack (LW: 6) 14-2 (2-1)

Last Week: L vs UNC 82-90, W vs Pitt 86-80; Next Week: @ Wake 1/15, @ ND 1/19

Number of the week: 21 - number of offensive rebounds the Wolfpack pulled down in their victory over Pitt. NC State dropped a tough matchup against in-state rival UNC earlier in the week, but rebounded with a high level of effort on the offensive glass Saturday afternoon.

6. Louisville Cardinals (LW: 7) 11-5 (2-1)

Last Week: L @ Pitt 86-89, W @ UNC 83-62; Next Week:

Number of the week: 11 - number of 3-pointers made in Louisville’s win over UNC. The Tar Heels could not withstand the barrage from downtown, giving Chris Mack and the Cardinals an early statement victory.

7. Syracuse Orange (LW: 9) 12-5 (3-1)

Last Week: W vs Clemson 61-53, L vs GT 59-73, W @ Duke 95-91; Next Week: vs Pitt 1/19

Number of the week: 82 - points scored by the Syracuse starters against Duke Monday night. The Orange starters outscored the Blue Devil starters 82-73, which is a good way to give yourself a shot against the most talented team in the nation.

8. Florida State Seminoles (LW: 5) 13-4 (1-3)

Last Week: W vs Miami 68-62, L vs Duke 78-80, L @ Pitt 62-75; Next Week: @ BC 1/20

Number of the week: 9.1 - the Noles 3-point percentage against Pitt. FSU shot 2-22 from deep, and suffered their second-consecutive defeat after being knocked off by Duke at the buzzer on Saturday,

9. Pittsburgh Panthers (LW: 10) 12-5 (2-2)

Last Week: W vs Louisville 89-86, L @ NC State 80-86, W vs FSU 75-62; Next Week: @ Syracuse 1/19

Number of the week: 21.3 - average points scored by freshman Xavier Johnson in Pitt’s 3 games last week. Johnson is one of the conference’s top freshman and leading scorers at 17 ppg, and the young Panthers are making some noise in the ACC.

10. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (LW: 11) 10-6 (2-1)

Last Week: L @ VT 49-52, W @ Syracuse 73-59; Next Week: @ Clemson 1/16, vs Louisville 1/19

Number of the week: 59.5 - GT’s field goal percentage in their win against Syracuse. The Yellow Jackets were super efficient, allowing them to beat the Orange by 14 despite taking 15 less shots than their counterparts.

11. Clemson Tigers (LW: 8) 10-6 (0-3)

Last Week: L @ Syracuse 53-61, L vs UVA 43-63; Next Week: vs GT 1/16

Number of the week: 54.6 - average points scored by the Tigers in conference play. Clemson started the new year with a trio of tough opponents, and were unable to get any footing on the offensive end in any of those games.

12. Notre Dame Fighting Irish (LW: 12) 11-5 (1-2)

Last Week: W vs BC 69-66; Next Week: @ UNC 1/16, vs NC State 1/19

Number of the week: 20 - made free throws by the Irish against BC. The Eagles outplayed Notre Dame in many facets of the game, but the Irish’s ability to get to the line and convert proved to be the difference.

13. Miami Hurricanes (LW: 14) 9-7 (1-3)

Last Week: L @ FSU 62-68, W vs WF 79-65; Next Week: vs UNC 1/19

Number of the week: 6 - double-doubles for Ebuka Izundu. The senior center has picked up the slack for Dewan Hernandez, who is still trying to work his way back into eligibility after another NCAA ruling did not go in his favor.

14. Boston College Eagles (LW: 13) 9-6 (0-3)

Last Week: L vs UVA 56-83, L @ ND 66-69; Next Week: @ Louisville 1/16, vs FSU 1/20

Number of the week: 8 - rebounds per game by guard Ky Bowman. The junior ranks 5th in the ACC in rebounding despite being only 6’1”. Bowman is doing everything he can to will BC to victory. His 20.3 ppg are admirable, but it hasn’t translated into success for the Eagles.

15. Wake Forest Demon Deacons (LW: 15) 7-8 (0-3)

Last Week: L vs Duke 65-87, L @ Miami 65-79; Next Week: vs NC State 1/15, @ VT 1/19

Number of the week: 86 - average points allowed per game in conference play for Wake Forest. It’ll be hard for the Demon Deacons to win any ACC games giving up that many points.
