Miami Hurricanes News and Notes — Miami dives deeper into the portal

Two new names surfacing as potential transfers for Miami

What if I told you on this same day in the year 2016 that Tate Martell, Bubba Bolden, Brevin Jordan, and Jaelan Phillips would be Miami Hurricanes. If you did some basic research, your common sense would tell you that Miami wouldn't reel in West Coast kids, especially not four top 60 players in their respective class. Phillips was actually the number one overall player in the 2017 class, according to 247Sports, and decided to transfer from UCLA.

It would have been a pipe dream. Only the most ignorant Canes fans would have assumed they would all be Hurricanes. Well I am here to tell you that three of those four are Hurricanes today, mostly through uncommon and unforeseen circumstances and the former top prep athlete in the country could be joining Jordan, Martell, and Bolden this weekend.

Phillips is a 6’5 255 pound OLB/DE from Redlands, CA. Although it is important to be aware of his health situation. He was constantly injured his first two years at UCLA and reports came out that he was retiring from football due to medical reasons. It was always a possibility that he would play again, it just certainly was not going to be for UCLA.

A fresh start in Miami sounds like the move right now, with many others in his same situation looking to do the same. It doesn't hurt that some of his West Coast brothers are doing the same.

Another name to look out for is Trevon Hill, a transfer from Virginia Tech who made 12 starts and had 9.5 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks for the Hokies in 2017. He was dismissed from the team early in the season for “not upholding the high standards we have for our student athletes at Virginia Tech” according to Virginia Tech head coach Justin Fuente.

No news has come out about him specifically, but I have been hearing for some about a week now that he is a name to watch out for.

If Diaz only takes one defensive end it’s going to be Phillips, who is actually planning a visit and will likely be committing during his time here in Miami. I don't see why he would take the coast-to-coast trip to just to kick it for a weekend. I believe he will be a Cane by this time next week.
