Manny Diaz And Canes Better Be Able To Back Up The Talk

With a loud offseason, UM better be able to walk the walk in 2019.

The Miami Hurricanes under new head coach Manny Diaz have been the toast of college football so far this offseason. From signing top transfers, branding their new #TNM attitude and crashing FSU’s clinic in Orlando, the Canes are making sure the entire country knows that this indeed is The New Miami.

All those things are great power moves, but the time is going to come, and soon, where the Hurricanes are going to have to back their talk up with wins.

Swagger has always been apart of UM football, and that word will forever be linked to this program. Though we’ve seen in the past 15 years how that swagger can be excessive cockiness as well.

Don’t think that I’m hating on what Manny is doing so far, because I absolutely love the energy and hype that has returned to Miami, especially after an abysmal 2018 season. Change was obviously needed because of Mark Richt, and I believe Diaz was 100-percent the right choice to be the next coach.

Though there’s a certain sense of confidence that everyone has at the moment, and we’re acting like we just didn’t come off one of the worst seasons in UM history.

To sum it up perfectly, this week Michael Pinckney posted a picture on Instagram, and then had former Canes D.J. Williams and Antrel Rolle get after him, reminding the senior linebacker that Miami was still 7-6 last year.

That’s something that hopefully stays in the mind of everyone associated with the Miami program, 7-6. Legendary Ohio State coach Woody Hayes, after his Buckeyes were upset by rival Michigan in 1969, Hayes made his players walk across a huge rug in the facility everyday that read, “Michigan 24 Ohio State 12.” The Buckeyes went on to defeat the Wolverines the following year.

Point is for the Hurricanes, just make sure that you’ll be able to back up the smack talk.

The reason we don't associate the word cocky with the 1980’s Canes is because they won. Melvin Bratton and Alonzo Highsmith waking up Brian Bosworth the night before the 1986 game against Oklahoma is classic. Wouldn’t be so fondly remembered if the Sooners won the next day.

On the other hand, fatigues would be worn at every UM game if the Hurricanes were able to beat Penn State in the Fiesta Bowl. Instead, it’s a sad story how Miami was overconfident and blew a National championship.

If there's a perfect example of the inability to not back up confidence, it was Miami in 2018. Preseason ranked number eight, then turning into the laughing stock of the country.

For Manny Diaz and his team, 2019 can’t be looked at as a “rebuilding” year anymore, with the excuse of a first year head coach. The players are there, the coaches are there, Miami has to make it to Charlotte as Coastal division champs.

It’s still over 25 weeks away, but August 31st against Florida will be here before we know it, and if Miami comes out of Orlando with a loss, #TNM won’t be looking as cool like it does at the moment.
