Over the weekend, the ACC announced its opening games for the 2019 ACC Tournament in Charlotte, NC. The Canes will open the tourney on Tuesday against Wake Forest with a noon ET tip-off. The Canes are currently 7.5 point favorites coming into the matchup, despite splitting the season series with the Demon Deacons.
If the Canes are able to advance to the second round, they would take on Virginia Tech for the third time this season. Miami is 0-2 against the Hokies in 2019, losing both games by double digits. Tip-off for that game would be Wednesday at 2:00pm ET. The winner of VT’s second round matchup then moves on to play Florida State in the quarterfinal round.
While no path would be easy for this year’s Canes, you could argue that Miami has a decent draw if they were to catch fire, as they would avoid Duke, Virginia and North Carolina until the semifinals. In Coach Larranaga’s first 6 seasons at Miami, he won at least one game in the conference tourney before being knocked off by UNC in the quarterfinals last season. The Canes have won the ACC tournament once, during the magical 2012-13 season in which they swept both the regular season and conference tournament titles.
You can watch Tuesday’s first round game on ESPN or via the WatchESPNapp.
