Miami dropped to 15-4 (3-2 ACC) after a tough Saturday loss to the North Carolina Tar Heels. The Hurricanes offense struggled all day, with the only scoring coming in the top of the fourth off of a single, double, and home run that tied the game at three at the time.
Besides that rally Tar Heels starter Tyler Baum dominated the Hurricanes. He allowed just four hits and struck out six en route to the victory. Austin Love worked the final innings out of the bullpen and gave up just one hit. The two combined to shut down Miami and cause some swings that the ‘Canes will try to forget quickly.
North Carolina blew the game open in the bottom of the fifth. Two walks and a HBP loaded the bases with no outs and spelled the end of a struggling Chris McMahon’s day. Albert Maury entered the game for Miami and quickly got a strikeout and a sac-fly for two quick outs. He looked set to get out of the inning allowing only one run until two consecutive RBI singles against the shift made the game 6-3 after five.
In the bottom of the seventh Caleb Roberts knocked a lead off single past Alex Toral. Dylan Enwiller pinch ran for him and wreaked havoc on the basepaths, stealing second and third and scoring on an error on the throw down to third. UNC pushed the game out of reach in the bottom of the eighth when Michael Busch knocked a two-run home run off of JP Gates and the game was effectively over.
Miami will have nightmares tonight that flash them back to just a few weekends ago against Florida. The Hurricanes need to play well in the rubber match tomorrow. The Tar Heels are the favorite in the ACC Coastal and the Hurricanes need to take advantage of their Friday night win over UNC.
