Miami’s Defensive Line Is Being ‘Slept on’ Despite Being Reloaded for 2019

The Miami Hurricanes were left off of 247Sports’ list of “10 nastiest defensive lines in college football for 2019,” published earlier this spring.

247Sports’ ranking may be surprising for some Hurricane fans, as the ‘Canes have added great talent to replace stars like Gerald Willis III and Joe Jackson.

Not only has Manny Diaz and his staff ‘reloaded’ the defensive line — they’ve successfully helped it become one of the deepest groups in the ACC.

Just a handful of the standout names on Miami’s roster are Nesta Jade Silvera, Scott Patchan, Pat Bethel, Jonathan Garvin, Jonathan Ford, and transfer Trevon Hill.

With Nesta Jade Silvera taking great strides in spring ball, it seems that he’s ready to assume a greater role on defense — becoming a potential starter. Jonathan Ford also impressed during spring camp, earning a special nod from defensive coordinator Blake Baker, amongst other members of Miami’s defensive coaching staff.

Expecting these players to perfectly match Gerald Willis’ production a season ago is a tough expectation, but the depth that the ‘Canes have built may result in a more ‘complete’ group, with not much fallout in talent between substitutions.

Ultimately, the Hurricanes will have to prove themselves, per usual — the early doubt will surely turn in to added motivation.
