The Miami Hurricanes are one game away from elimination in the NCAA Tournament after a Friday night loss to the Central Michigan Chippewas. The ‘Canes got out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the third before letting it slip away.
In the bottom of the third the ‘Canes took complete control of the game. Gabe Rivera started the frame with a solo home run. After two singles Adrian Del Castillo came to the plate and launched the second home run of the inning to give Miami the 4-0 lead.
Central Michigan responded in the next two innings. In the top of the fourth, the Chippewas scratched a run across with a single and an RBI triple. Then, in the top of the fifth, CMU scored four runs to take a 5-4 lead over the Hurricanes. One run scored on a fielding error from Alex Toral as he mishandled a sharp grounder to first. Then, with two outs, Evan Kratt laced a three-RBI double to left that gave Central Michigan the lead.
Miami couldn’t get anything going offensively until Adrian Del Castillo tied the game at five with his second home run of the night in the bottom of the seventh. The score remained tied until the top of the ninth. A lead off single set up the Chippewas well for a big inning, and a sac-bunt moved the runner into scoring position. Another two-out RBI, this time from David Cole, gave the Chippewas the lead they wouldn’t relinquish.
In the bottom of the ninth the Hurricanes managed to put a runner on first, but he moved no further and the ‘Canes dropped into the losers bracket. Now, Miami will have to win four games in a row to make it into the next weekend of the NCAA Tournament, no easy task for a young team.
