100 Greatest Plays In Miami History: #57-Gino Torretta 3rd-and-12 Scramble Against FSU 1992

With Miami facing a 3rd-and-12 in the fourth quarter, Gino Torretta faced the FSU defense with his legs.

Two straight appearances for Gino Torretta on this Top-100 play countdown, but hey, that’s what happens when you’re a Heisman Trophy winner and a legend at Miami.

The year Torretta won the Heisman Trophy in 1992, one of those performances came in a classic showdown against #3 Florida State and superstar Charlie Ward in the Orange Bowl.

Ranked #2 and defending national champions, Miami dueled it out that day with the Noles, and it was one of the most brutal and hard-hitting games you’ll ever see.

Nobody showed more heart and toughness that day than Torretta, and down 16-10 with nine minutes to go in the game, Miami faced a 3rd-and-12, desperately looking to extend the drive.

Gino had a plethora of talented receivers, but on this play, the warrior took matters into his own hands, scrambled for 14-yards and picked up the first down, before being hit hard at the end. That first down was a crucial part in that drive, as Torretta hit Lamar Thomas on the go-ahead touchdown a few plays later. Miami would go on to win 19-16.
